GP Gelcoat Resin is a white, high-gloss polyester surface-coating resin — not a laminating resin. It is applied as the outermost layer of an FRP moulding, brushed, sprayed or rollered directly onto the mould face before any reinforcement goes in, where its high viscosity and thixotropic behaviour let it cling to vertical and overhead surfaces without sagging or running. Once cured with an MEKP catalyst, it forms a smooth, glossy, protective skin that shields the laminate against moisture and abrasion and gives the finished part its visible surface finish, while the structural laminate itself — typically GP Clear Resin, reinforced with glass fibre — is built up behind it. Samrat Poly Resins supplies GP Gelcoat Resin as a 100% pure, general-purpose white gelcoat suited to a wide range of FRP mould work.
In a typical FRP lay-up, GP Gelcoat Resin is brushed or sprayed onto the mould first and left to gel, then reinforced with glass fibre saturated in a laminating resin such as our GP Clear Resin or base Unsaturated Polyester Resin (UPR), catalysed with an MEKP hardener. Where a coloured rather than plain white finish is needed, FRP Polyester Pigment can be blended into the gelcoat before catalysing. For door and plywood lamination work rather than mould gelcoating, see our Lamination Resin; for moulds facing harsher chemical exposure or continuous water immersion, a Vinyl Ester Resin system may be more suitable.
What is Gelcoat Resin / GP Gelcoat Resin?
GP Gelcoat Resin is Samrat Poly Resins’ published white, high-gloss polyester surface-coating gelcoat for the mould-facing side of an FRP part. It is applied to the mould before the reinforced laminate is built behind it.
For buyers, Gelcoat Resin is a mould-side surface-finish decision rather than a substitute for a laminating resin. Its published high viscosity, thixotropy and 8.5-minute gel time should be reviewed with the mould condition, application method, required appearance and the rest of the FRP build-up before selecting a product system.

- Fast gel time of 8.5 minutes for efficient mould-release cycles
- Cures with MEKP catalyst and cobalt octoate accelerator at room temperature
- 30% styrene content for consistent, controlled application viscosity
- Supplied in 50 kg or 225 kg packs; minimum order 500 kg
Applications
- Mould surfaces for FRP boat hulls and body panels
- Bathware, sanitaryware and water tank exteriors
- FRP furniture, panels and moulded components
What this means for FRP surface-finish buyers
Visible mould-side role
The published product role is the visible surface layer of an FRP moulding, helping buyers separate the required appearance and gloss from the structural laminate requirement behind it.
Surface-application checks
The published 11,000 cPs viscosity, thixotropic behaviour and 8.5-minute gel time are relevant to mould-side application. Confirm the mould condition, application method, timing and TDS before production.
