Why GP Gelcoat Resin is suitable

GP Gelcoat Resin's thixotropic body and high gloss finish suit the flat and gently curved panel moulds typical of bus and commercial vehicle body fabrication. It is not the structural material of the panel: glass fibre reinforcement wet out with GP Clear Resin forms the structural laminate behind it, often over a foam or honeycomb core for insulated panel bodies. Because transport body panels are exposed outdoors for the vehicle's working life, the same caution applies here as with any long-term outdoor gelcoat use: GP Gelcoat Resin has no UV-stabiliser package confirmed in its specification, which matters on a vehicle exterior. Where long-term outdoor colour stability is the requirement, the ISO Gelcoat grade is the one normally specified for surfaces facing weathering and outdoor service — compare the two on the gelcoat hub, and raise the expected service life and colour with the technical team before specifying either.

Manufacturing process

Gelcoat is sprayed or brushed onto the panel mould first and left to gel, then glass fibre reinforcement wet out with GP Clear Resin, catalysed with an MEKP hardener and cobalt octoate accelerator, is built up behind it — for insulated body panels, this is often laminated over a foam or honeycomb core. Once cured, panels are released from the mould with the gelcoat forming the finished exterior surface, trimmed, and fitted to the vehicle body frame.
