Resin for Boat & Marine Components

FRP boat and marine work uses three resin roles rather than one: a laminating grade such as GP Clear Resin or Lamination Resin to wet out the glass reinforcement and build the structural hull, a gelcoat applied first against the mould to form the visible outer surface, and — where a project states a chemical- or water-resistance requirement that a general-purpose grade does not cover — a vinyl ester grade reviewed on its own published data. Suitability for any specific vessel, service condition or class requirement must be confirmed against the relevant product TDS and the builder's own specification; nothing on this page constitutes a marine approval or certification.

Fibreglass has been the dominant boat-building material for small and mid-size craft for decades, prized for its strength-to-weight ratio, resistance to rot and corrosion, and the design freedom that moulding gives builders over plank-built timber or welded metal hulls. Every FRP hull, deck and marine component starts the same way regardless of the boat's final size or use: layers of glass reinforcement wet out with resin and cured into a single structural laminate.

Manufacturing process

Hulls and decks are typically built by hand lay-up in an open mould: a gelcoat layer is applied first for the finished exterior surface, followed by chopped strand mat and woven roving wet out with resin catalysed by an MEKP hardener and cobalt octoate accelerator, built up layer by layer to the specified hull thickness. Each layer is rolled to remove trapped air before the next is added. Once fully cured at room temperature, the hull or component is released from the mould, trimmed, and finished for fitting out.
