What shrinkage means in an FRP application

Shrinkage refers to dimensional change as a resin system cures. In practical FRP manufacturing, its importance depends on the part: a large moulded surface, a detailed pattern, a tight-fit component and a general fabricated item may not have the same dimensional or surface expectations.

Why one answer does not fit every part

The finished result is influenced by the resin grade, reinforcement, laminate design, geometry, mould condition and cure environment. This is why a general statement about a resin family is not enough to predict a specific part. The production requirement must be defined before a supplier can discuss the relevant system.

Practical prevention approach

Start with the right application and process discussion rather than an after-the-fact correction. Confirm the part geometry, reinforcement, finish, dimensional tolerance, expected production method and any current process issue. Maintain consistent handling and follow the published product guidance rather than changing cure inputs without approval.

What to share with the supplier

Share drawings or part dimensions where appropriate, the moulding method, reinforcement, laminate build-up, visible surface requirement, quantity and the problem being observed. This gives the supplier the context needed to discuss product selection without making unsupported performance promises.
