How styrene links into the cured network

Unsaturated polyester resin gets its name from reactive (unsaturated) sites distributed along its molecular backbone. During cure — triggered by the free radicals generated from a peroxide catalyst, typically accelerated by a cobalt accelerator — styrene molecules react with these unsaturated sites, forming cross-links between polyester chains. The result is a rigid, three-dimensional cross-linked network: the solid, cured laminate.

This is why styrene content isn't simply a viscosity knob — it's a genuine reactant in the chemistry that determines the cured material's structure and mechanical properties, alongside the polyester resin's own backbone chemistry.
