Beyond gel timing: other cure-related defects

Gel time being faster or slower than expected is one category of curing problem (see the dedicated cure-speed troubleshooting guide) — but fabricators also encounter defects that aren't purely about timing: a surface that stays tacky long after it should have hardened, a laminate that cures unevenly across its thickness, or one batch behaving differently from the last even though the recipe seemed unchanged.

A resin surface remaining tacky after cure is commonly associated with under-catalysation, but can also relate to air inhibition (oxygen at the surface interfering with cure in resins not formulated with a wax additive for that purpose) or a cure-system mismatch — always cross-check against the specific resin's guidance rather than assuming one single cause.

Keeping batches consistent

Inconsistent results between batches are frequently traced back to measurement and mixing practice — imprecise dosing, inconsistent mixing time, or components measured by eye rather than by weight or calibrated dispensing. Establishing a consistent measurement and mixing routine is one of the more reliable ways to reduce batch-to-batch variation, independent of any single ingredient.
