What these applications have in common
Isophthalic gelcoat is specified where a visible surface has to keep its appearance and its barrier function under wetting, cleaning, heat or sunlight for years. The common demand is retained gloss, retained colour and resistance to hydrolysis at a free surface.
What they do not have in common is continuous immersion. That is a different and more demanding problem, and it belongs one rung higher on the ladder.
Sanitaryware and bathware
This is the best-documented home for isophthalic gelcoat. Bathtubs, shower trays, shower receptors, wash basins and vanity units all present a surface that faces hot water, detergents, cosmetics and abrasive cleaning for a product lifetime measured in decades.
The performance bar in this sector is set by the plastic bathtub and shower standards, whose gelcoat-relevant tests are instructive even where they are not contractually required: boiling-water resistance, accelerated colour fastness, stain resistance against a defined list including shoe polish, ink, iodine, hair dye and lipstick, and an abrasive-slurry cleanability and wear test.
Those four tests are a good summary of what a sanitaryware buyer is actually purchasing, and they are worth quoting back to any supplier as the questions to answer.
Water tanks and stored-water equipment
Sectional and moulded GRP water tanks put two quite different demands on the gelcoat. The outer face takes sustained ultraviolet exposure on a roof, where chalking and colour loss are the failure modes. The inner face takes permanent or near-permanent water contact, where hydrolysis and cleanability matter.
For rooftop and above-ground tanks that are drained and refilled, isophthalic is a sensible specification. Where the inner surface is genuinely continuously immersed for years, the NPG step up deserves consideration for that face.
Potable-water suitability is a separate matter entirely. It is governed by regulatory approval and testing of the finished construction, not by resin chemistry, so it should be raised as its own requirement at enquiry stage.
Marine topsides and non-immersed surfaces
Decks, superstructure, cabin tops, hull sides above the waterline, consoles, hatches and locker lids are all isophthalic territory. They face ultraviolet light, salt spray, rain and regular washing, and they are judged on gloss and colour retention rather than on immersion performance.
The line in marine work is drawn hard and it is worth respecting: products designed for topsides and deck are not suitable for permanent immersion, and topside and bottom products are not interchangeable. For anything below the waterline the honest recommendation is isophthalic-NPG or a vinyl ester barrier system.
Transport, truck bodies and vehicle panels
FRP panel surfaces on truck and trailer bodies, recreational vehicle roof and sidewall panels, vehicle liners and bus and rail interior panels all need a surface that survives weather, washing, road grime and ultraviolet light while staying presentable.
These are cosmetic-critical, high-visibility surfaces produced in volume, which puts colour consistency between batches near the top of the requirement list alongside the weathering performance itself.
Architectural panels and industrial enclosures
GRP façade elements, interior and exterior wall cladding, canopies and decorative architectural mouldings are specified on appearance retention over a building's life, with colour matching across panels a recurring practical problem.
Industrial enclosures, cabinets, covers and equipment housings share the weathering requirement but add cleanability and resistance to incidental chemical contact. Neither group is immersed, which is what keeps them in isophthalic rather than NPG territory.
Where orthophthalic is genuinely sufficient
It is worth saying plainly, because over-specifying wastes money and undermines trust. Indoor parts, non-cosmetic-critical enclosures, short-to-medium service life and cost-driven general moulding are all fine in an orthophthalic gelcoat.
The isophthalic premium buys hydrolytic stability and weathering. If the part never sees water, sunlight or years, it never calls on either.
What to specify when you enquire
Name the part and say whether its surface is immersed, intermittently wetted or dry. State the exposure: indoor, outdoor, coastal, rooftop. State the thermal and chemical contact, including hot water and cleaning agents. State the colour and how tightly it must match across batches or against an existing part.
Then cover process: brush or spray, your equipment, your mould and shop temperatures, your volume and your finish standard. Those details decide grade and viscosity choice far more reliably than an application name does.
